Does Tallow Balm Melt in South African Heat? How to Store It
Share
Short answer: yes. Tallow balm softens in warm weather and can melt completely on a hot South African day. Melting does not ruin it. What shortens its life is repeated heat, light, air and water getting into the jar. Store it somewhere cool, dark and dry, and it will look after you.
At what temperature does tallow balm melt?
Beef tallow melts at roughly 27–38°C. That range sits right inside an ordinary South African summer day, and a whipped balm goes soft before it turns fully liquid.
The air temperature is only part of the story. A parked car, a sunny windowsill, a gym bag or a courier van gets far hotter than the air outside, so a jar can melt on a day that feels mild.
Is melted tallow balm still safe to use?
Yes. Melting is a change of texture, not a sign that the balm has spoiled. Once it cools and sets, you can use it as normal.
Two things do change:
- Texture. A whipped balm loses its air when it melts. It can set firmer and denser, and sometimes slightly grainy.
- Freshness over time. Fats slowly go rancid, and heat speeds that up. One melt is not a problem. Weeks in a hot car are.
How to fix a jar that has melted
- Keep the lid on and stand the jar upright.
- Put it in the fridge for an hour or two until it is firm again.
- If you want a smoother finish, stir it with a clean, dry spoon as it starts to thicken.
- Do not microwave it or heat it further.
It will not be as fluffy as the day it was whipped, but it will work the same way on your skin.
The best way to store tallow balm in South Africa
- Choose a cool, dark cupboard or drawer. Keep it away from windows, geysers, stoves and heaters.
- Never leave it in the car. The same goes for a handbag or gym bag left in the sun.
- Keep water out of the jar. This is the most important rule. A balm made of fats and oils has nothing in it to stop mould or bacteria once water gets in. Use clean, dry fingers or a small spatula.
- Close the lid properly after every use. Air and light speed up rancidity.
- Use the fridge in a heatwave. You do not need it most of the year. Chilled balm is firmer, so warm a little between your fingertips before you apply it.
- Bathrooms are fine if the jar is closed and kept away from shower steam and splashes.
How long does tallow balm last?
There is no single number that is true for every tallow balm. It depends on the recipe, how warm it has been kept and whether water has got into the jar. Dermatologists do note that tallow products without preservatives can spoil faster than conventional moisturisers, so it is worth paying attention.
Trust your senses. Stop using the balm if you notice:
- a sharp, sour or stale-oil smell that was not there before
- a change in colour
- spots of mould, or beads of water in the jar
If you are not sure, throw it out. Buying a jar size you will finish in good time is better than keeping a large one for too long.
Ordering tallow balm in summer
- Have it delivered to an address where someone can take the parcel inside straight away.
- Do not leave the parcel in a car, a postbox in the sun or on a hot stoep.
- If the jar arrives soft or melted, put it in the fridge for an hour or two before you open it.
What about tallow scrub and tallow soap?
The same rules apply to our Coffee & Vanilla Tallow Body Scrub, with one extra risk: it is used in the shower. Scoop out what you need with dry hands before you get in, and keep the jar out of the water.
Soap is different. A cured bar like our Grass-Fed Tallow Soap Bar is hard and will not melt on the shelf. It just needs a draining soap dish so it can dry between uses.
For the balm itself, see our Frankincense Whipped Tallow Balm, and read Is beef tallow good for your skin? if you are still deciding.
Frequently asked questions
Should I keep tallow balm in the fridge?
You do not have to. A cool, dark cupboard is enough for most of the year. The fridge is useful during a heatwave or if your home gets very warm.
Why has my tallow balm gone grainy?
It has most likely melted and then cooled slowly. Graininess is a texture change, not a sign of spoilage, and the grains melt on contact with warm skin.
Does melting make tallow balm less effective?
A single melt does not change how it moisturises. Repeated or long exposure to heat is what makes fats go rancid sooner.
Can I travel with tallow balm?
Yes. Keep it in your bag and out of direct sun, and never leave it in a parked car.
How do I know if tallow balm has gone off?
Smell it. A sharp, sour or stale-oil smell means it is rancid. Visible mould or water in the jar also means it is time to throw it away.
